The inauguration of the POIC CHEF Academy brought a long-held dream to life. The inaugural cohort commenced their 12-week journey, equipped with skills and passion to enter the culinary and hospitality industry.

The CHEF Academy offers a full-time paid study program, providing intensive culinary training and professional connections, eliminating financial barriers by funding the curriculum, and compensating trainees. Trainees develop lasting relationships with industry professionals and the community, paving the way for successful future career paths and showcasing our dedication to professional development.

After eagerly awaiting an in-person gathering, the June graduation ceremony united all RAHS campuses in a profoundly touching celebration. One of the senior representatives, Amaya Upton, eloquently captured the excellence that defines Rosemary Anderson students. Despite starting high school amid the challenges of the COVID pandemic, these seniors triumphed over adversity, proudly turning their tassels as they stepped into the next chapter. Congratulations to the resilient Rosemary Anderson class of 2023!

 

POIC Public Safety Worker Program: Empowering Change

President + CEO Joe McFerrin II introduced the POIC Public Safety Worker model this year, an evolution of the critical work of the Community Care Team. This career path strengthens violence prevention efforts using the Cure Violence Global Model. Public Safety Workers will act as violence interrupters, employing culturally sensitive and trauma-informed methods. Staff in these roles will receive a 15% pay raise, enhance their professional growth, and take a significant step toward further professionalizing this vital career path.

 

Albina Arts Center: A Heartwarming Reunion

The Oregon Community Foundation granted ownership of the Albina Arts Center to POIC + RAHS, a huge development for reviving it as a hub for Black art. This change isn't just about who owns it—it shows a real commitment to keeping places that celebrate Black creativity alive. The reunion between CEO Joe and his 2nd-grade teacher added a personal touch, highlighting how much this means for preserving our heritage and supporting new talent. It's not just about the past; it's about ensuring a solid future for Black art in Albina.
