On August 15, 2023, The Oregon Community Foundation made an exciting announcement about the Albina Arts Center's new ownership, granting the building to POIC + RAHS. A heartwarming reunion took place at the press conference, adding an emotional moment to the event. Joe McFerrin II, President and CEO of POIC + RAHS, was reunited with the teacher who taught him to read, Joyce Braden Harris.

As a first-grade student, Joe was taught by "Mama Joyce," a legendary Portland-based educator and Black activist. Harris co-founded the Black Education Center in 1970, a pioneering institution that taught young students reading, math, and African-American cultural history. What started as a summer program for local Black youth eventually became a full-time private elementary school and a beacon of hope for the community.

The reunion between Joe and "Mama Joyce" highlighted the impact of dedicated educators who shape the lives of their students. Mentorship opportunities will continue as the Albina Arts Center changes hands, as the building will host intergenerational programming led by partner PassinArt. The Albina Art Center's new chapter isn't just about ownership but about continuing this legacy of Black excellence for generations to come.

Black community members, teachers, business owners, and arts leaders gather to celebrate the ownership change and vision for the Albina Arts Center that promotes intergenerational wealth and community building.
