From Classroom to Career: Microchip Technology Tour

POIC + RAHS and Microchip Technology executives visiting the Construction Pre-Apprenticeship cohort

Training Instructor Torre Sathrum talks to the tour group about the Construction Pre-Apprenticeship program’s curriculum

Microchip Technology Vice President Dan Malinaric and colleagues, alongside CEO Joe McFerrin II, toured POIC facilities to explore the distinctive educational and career opportunities available within our community. Microchip Technology, recently awarded a grant under the federal CHIPS Act, has since partnered with POIC + RAHS to launch a pioneering workforce semiconductor program, opening doors to career pathways in the industry. The collaboration offers direct career opportunities tailored for women and people of color who excel in this field. Through the visit, Microchip Technology gained insight into the essence of our alternative schooling and career training programs.

The tour kicked off at the POIC partner Northwest College of Construction, where Microchip Technology representatives had the chance to dive into the world of hands-on learning. They chatted with Program Coordinator Charles Manigo and Training Instructor Torre Sathrum, discussing the various skills participants will learn like carpentry, electrical work, and welding. More than just learning specific techniques, the conversation centered on empowerment. It highlighted the program's mission to provide students with both the practical and soft skills tools to succeed beyond the classroom. Whether honing craftsmanship or navigating the certification process, the focus is on equipping individuals with the confidence and resilience necessary to thrive in the real world.

Principal of RAHS East Campus Erin Kent leads the tour through the Rockwood site

Transitioning to Rosemary Anderson High School's East Campus, our guests were welcomed by Principal Erin Kent into a community unlike any other. They peeked into classrooms buzzing with activity and learned about our holistic approach to education. From the calming yoga room to the invaluable support of our Community Cares Team which works particularly in addressing the unique challenges and traumas that many of our students face, every aspect of our school is designed to nurture and uplift our students.

Chef Kiara Hardy led a walkthrough of the POIC Kitchen while describing the curriculum of the CHEF Program

As the tour drew to a close, our journey led us to the vibrant hub of culinary creativityβ€”the POIC Kitchen. Culinary Director Kiara Hardy and Head Culinary Instructor Duoshun Pledgure took the opportunity to showcase the remarkable talents nurtured within our CHEF Program. With passion and skill, participants crafted an impressive assortment of culinary delights that reflected their journey of growth and dedication. From the moment guests sampled the freshly made tortilla chips to indulging in the vibrant flavors of the mouthwatering salsas and perfectly seasoned chicken, each bite served as a clear example of the effort and growth happening within the program.

As the tour came to an end, it was evident that this journey was about more than just buildings and programsβ€”it was about people. It was about the partnerships we forge and the futures we shape together. With the support of companies like Microchip Technology, we're not just preparing students for careers; we're opening doors to endless possibilities.

In the end, our mission is simple: to provide opportunities for every individual to thrive. And as we continue on this journey, hand in hand with our partners and our community, we do so with humility and a shared vision of a brighter tomorrow.
