PDX Celebrating Juneteenth

As more and more Oregonians become vaccinated and restrictions start to relax a bit, Portland is ready to celebrate this Juneteenth, especially since Oregon just declared it a state holiday starting in 2022. While some events will be live-streamed, many will be in person and happening throughout the city.

Juneteenth, also known as “Independence Day” or “Freedom Day,” commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of African American slaves.

On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, effectively ending slavery on January 1, 1863. However, the Proclamation had little effect in Texas until two and half years later. It was on June 19, 1865 that Union General Gordon Granger read the General Orders of the Proclamation.

Here is a list of several Juneteenth events happening in Portland.

Billy Webb Elks Lodge will host local small businesses and artists at this historical landmark within the African American community. “Our goal is to showcase local talent and entrepreneurship while also celebrating the history within our community.”
