What We Do
Redirecting Lives
Portland OIC has a successful
history reconnecting students who have lost interest in school by
addressing the academic, social, and work readiness skills
necessary to make a positive transition into adulthood.
Our holistically-based approach to
helping youth demands that we support our participants beyond
reading, writing, and job training skills. To that end,
Portland OIC, over the past three years, has worked extremely hard to
create a System of Care utilizing volunteers, community partners,
business people, and university students to eliminate the barriers
to academic and personal growth of which students face daily.
Who We Serve
Many incoming Portland OIC students
are low income (85% free lunch) minority youth who have never had a
job (81%). They include teen parents (9%), alcohol and drug
abusers (14%), juvenile offenders (12%), and social security/welfare
recipients (82%).
